Writing Jokes For Cartoons - More Formulas For Funny Cartoon Ideas

Anticipation - With this formula you let the reader guess part of the gag. The humor is in knowing what comes next. For example, look at this gag:
Surprise - One thing that makes us laugh is surprise. If something completely unexpected happens, either in the drawing or in the gag line, it evokes laughter. Here is an example.



Tip: Word your gag so that the surprise occurs in the last couple of words. If the surprise is in the picture, keep in mind that people read from left to right, so have the surprise element in your picture on the right side.
Funny Signs -A good formula is to create a gag in which there is no caption at all, just a funny sign somewhere in the drawing. See the example on the left.
